A honeymoon in Venice is one of the most romantic choices you could make. This really is a unique honeymoon because Venice is like nowhere else.
A city build on over 100 islands, its roads are canals. Except for the meandering small streets that take you over arched bridges, through village squares and along narrow corridors and alleyways. As you walk over one of the numerous bridges, you'll often see gondolas gliding underneath, transporting people from one part of the city to another. You might even hear lovers being serenaded by the gondolier.
I can vouch for the fact that Venice is a wonderful place to visit in all of the 4 seasons. Again, your stay will be unique, according to what time of year you go. The mood of the city is different in summer than it is in winter... and has contrasts between spring and autumn.
If you know where to eat in Venice -- away from the more touristic areas -- you'll discover some wonderful food. Simple and elegant. Some wonderful seafood. And if you want to go to one of the fashionable haunts, try Harry's Bar for their famous "Bellini".. fresh white peach juice blended with prosecco.
Each time I returned to Venice I did it better, having learned from previous visits. For example, you can get much better value by booking a self-catering apartment, rather than a tiny hotel room. On one visit, we rented a baby palazzo.... for much less than a hotel... and SO much more enjoyable too.
This could definitely win the vote for the best honeymoon ever.
P.S. You may also want to have your Venice Honeymoon during Carnival... and dress up in a mask and historic costume. This is a truly unforgettable experience that takes place each year during the week prior to lent (in the Catholic calendar). Shrove (or "pancake") Tuesday is the last hurrah before the sombre next morning of Ash Wednesday. It's then "party over" until the following year.
Wedding-Honeymoon travel deserves a separate category of its own. This is where couples actually travel, with their wedding party and guests, TO a particular destination where they will have both their wedding and honeymoon.
Many resorts all over the world cater for this double celebration, so to speak. So when looking for a hotel or resort in the region you want to be married, look on their website for the sub-headings. It might say "weddings / honeymoons" or just "romance". But it won't be hard to find.
This is also a great way for those couples on a second honeymoon to bring family or grown up children along.
And what you'll find is that there are great honeymoon vacation packages that cater well to those who have their wedding take place at the resort as well.
This takes the best honeymoon concept to a whole new level. Where will you choose?
A Mexico honeymoon might be just the thing. Far preferable than a Mexican divorce!
So, if you're looking for a laid-back, cultural kind of honeymoon, where better than Xalapa... capital of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Bright colours abound, along quaint cobblestone streets. Enjoy the colonial architecture and historic monuments, surrounded by a ring of volcanoes, and Mexico's highest mountain peak, Pico de Orizaba.
And if you are a fan of Mexican food and margueritas, then you'll enjoy the many restaurants, where you can be serenaded by a mariachi band. Some of my best memories of live restaurant music have been the wonderful harmonies of these trios.
So, put this charming option on your possible best honeymoon list.
If you enjoy the grandeur of being in the mountains, then this could be the best honeymoon for you. Yosemite National Park, in the Sierra Navada mountains of California, is a nature lover's paradise.
This honeymoon is also for the hikers... whether you are experienced in this area or just want to take in the views. I'll never forget seeing these majestic giant sequoias. Ancient splendour and true survivors, these trees will have you in a state of awe.
And if you love the photography of Ansel Adams, you will have a sense of walking in his footsteps and the other famous photographers in his peer group who captured those black and white images for us to marval at.
And of course, at the end of the day, you will return to your comfortable lodge ... maybe by a blazing fire... and celebrate your adventure honeymoon in Yosemite.
Zanzibar is one of those exotic honeymoon destinations. This will take you to the east coast of Africa. Zanzibar is actually an archipeligo of islands, and is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania.
This option really is a combination of many things: romantic beach holiday, water sports, adventure honeymoon, historic buildings, cultural tours and colourful spice markets.
You might also like the variety of some beach honeymoon, as well as a Tanzania safari. If so, this would be the perfect destination for both these activities.
As for where to stay, the Zanzibar Serena Inn -- in Stone town -- has been described as a "haven of tranquility", overlooking the sea. It caters thoughtfully for weddings and honeymoons, complete with rose petals strewn throughout your honeymoon suite...
